Think of it as help or kindness coming from someone who is in a superior position. God’s mercy looks to both the temporal needs of man (Ruth 1:8; Hebrews 4:16) and to the eternal salvation of people (Rom 9:23; Eph 2:4; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:3; Isa 55:7).

God’s mercy extends to Israel (Psalm 102:13) and to Gentiles (Romans 11:30-32; 15:9)

God’s mercy is free of any obligation and it is given as God sees fit to give it out (sovereign choice – Romans 9:15-16,18)

God is not stingy when it comes to giving out His mercy – God is “rich in mercy.” This can be demonstrated through out the Psalms.

 Exodus 33:19 And the Lord said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.

Deut. 4:31 For the Lord your God is a merciful God; he will not abandon or destroy you or forget the covenant with your forefathers, which he confirmed to them by oath.

 Deut. 13:17-18 None of those condemned things shall be found in your hands, so that the Lord will turn from his fierce anger; he will show you mercy, have compassion on you, and increase your numbers, as he promised on oath to your forefathers, 18because you obey the Lord your God, keeping all his commands that I am giving you today and doing what is right in his eyes.

Neh. 9:31 But in your great mercy you did not put an end to them or abandon them, for you are a gracious and merciful God.

Psalm 25:6 Remember, O Lord, your great mercy and love, for they are from of old.

Psalm 78:38 Yet he was merciful; he forgave their iniquities and did not destroy them. Time after time he restrained his anger and did not stir up his full wrath.  

Isaiah 55:7 Let the wicked forsake his way and the evil man his thoughts. Let him turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on him, and to our God, for he will freely pardon.

Isaiah 63:9 In all their distress he too was distressed, and the angel of his presence saved them. In his love and mercy he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.

Jeremiah 3:12 Go, proclaim this message toward the north: ” ‘Return, faithless Israel,’ declares the Lord, ‘I will frown on you no longer, for I am merciful,’ declares the Lord, ‘I will not be angry forever.

Lament. 3:22-23 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. 23They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

Daniel 9:9 The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against him;

Micah 7:18 Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy.

Zech. 1:16 “Therefore, this is what the Lord says: ‘I will return to Jerusalem with mercy, and there my house will be rebuilt. And the measuring line will be stretched out over Jerusalem,’ declares the Lord Almighty.

Luke 1:50 His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation.

Luke 6:35 But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.

Luke 18:10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.

Luke 18:13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’

Romans 9:16 It does not, therefore, depend on man’s desire or effort, but on God’s mercy.

Romans 9:23 What if he did this to make the riches of his glory known to the objects of his mercy, whom he prepared in advance for glory–

Romans 11:30-32 Just as you who were at one time disobedient to God have now received mercy as a result of their disobedience, 31so they too have now become disobedient in order that they too may now receive mercy as a result of God’s mercy to you. 32For God has bound all men over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all.

Ephes. 2:4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,

Hebrews 4:16 Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

James 5:11 As you know, we consider blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

1 Peter 1:3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

Jude 1:21 Keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.

God is entirely correct and just in all of His dealings with man. This justice works in compliance with His law. God’s justice is related to man’s sin. God’s law reflects His standard. God is just when He judges man for breaking the very  law that God has revealed.

God’s Righteousness means that God always acts in accordance with what is right. It is God Himself who is the final standard of what is right. (see below Deut 32:3)

 Exodus 34:6-7 And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, 7maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation.”

Deut. 32:4 He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.

2 Chron. 12:6 The leaders of Israel and the king humbled themselves and said, “The Lord is just.”

Neh. 9:33 In all that has happened to us, you have been just; you have acted faithfully, while we did wrong.

Job 34:17-30 Can he who hates justice govern? Will you condemn the just and mighty One? 18Is he not the One who says to kings, ‘You are worthless,’ and to nobles, ‘You are wicked,’ 19who shows no partiality to princes and does not favor the rich over the poor,for they are all the work of his hands? 20They die in an instant, in the middle of the night; the people are shaken and they pass away; the mighty are removed without human hand.

Psalm 33:5 The Lord loves righteousness and justice;the earth is full of his unfailing love.

Psalm 33:13-15 From heaven the Lord looks down and sees all mankind; 14from his dwelling place he watches all who live on earth– 15he who forms the hearts of all, who considers everything they do.

Psalm 36:6 Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your justice like the great deep. O Lord, you preserve both man and beast.

Psalm 45:6 Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.

Psalm 58:11 Then men will say, “Surely the righteous still are rewarded; surely there is a God who judges the earth.”

Psalm 96:13 they will sing before the Lord, for he comes, he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples in his truth.

Psalm 97:2 Clouds and thick darkness surround him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.

Psalm 140:12 I know that the Lord secures justice for the poor and upholds the cause of the needy.

Isaiah 30:18 Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; he rises to show you compassion. For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him!

Isaiah 61:8 “For I, the Lord, love justice; I hate robbery and iniquity. In my faithfulness I will reward them and make an everlasting covenant with them.

Ezekiel 18:4 For every living soul belongs to me, the father as well as the son–both alike belong to me. The soul who sins is the one who will die.

Zeph. 3:5 The Lord within her is righteous; he does no wrong. Morning by morning he dispenses his justice, and every new day he does not fail, yet the unrighteous know no shame.

Matthew 25:21 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’

Luke 18:7-8 And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? 8I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?”

Acts 17:31 For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead.”

Romans 1:32 Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

Romans 2:7 To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.

Romans 3:25-26 God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished– 26he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.

2 Thes. 1:8 He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Rev. 16:5-6 Then I heard the angel in charge of the waters say: “You are just in these judgments, you who are and who were, the Holy One, because you have so judged; 6for they have shed the blood of your saints and prophets, and you have given them blood to drink as they deserve.”

God is separate from moral evil, sin. A good description of God would be Majestic Purity or Majestic Ethics. God is morally pure. Holiness is God’s primary attribute and I think the one that He would want us to Know Him by.

Because God is absolutely Holy, sinners must be separated from Him unless a way can be found to constitute them holy. Do you have any guesses how that way has been provided? Is it by my merits or the merits of someone else?

The prophet Zechariah spoke of a day when everything on earth will be holy to the LORD -  Zech. 14:20-21 On that day Holy to the lord will be inscribed on the bells of the horses, and the cooking pots in the Lord’s house will be like the sacred bowls in front of the altar. 21Every pot in Jerusalem and Judah will be holy to the Lord Almighty, and all who come to sacrifice will take some of the pots and cook in them. And on that day there will no longer be a Canaanite in the house of the Lord Almighty.

 Exodus 15:1 Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord: “I will sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted. The horse and its rider he has hurled into the sea.

Leviticus 11:44-45 I am the Lord your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. Do not make yourselves unclean by any creature that moves about on the ground. 45I am the Lord who brought you up out of Egypt to be your God; therefore be holy, because I am holy.

Deut. 32:4 He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.

 Joshua 24:19 Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the Lord. He is a holy God; he is a jealous God. He will not forgive your rebellion and your sins.

1 Samuel 2:2 “There is no one holy like the Lord; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.

1 Samuel 6:20 and the men of Beth Shemesh asked, “Who can stand in the presence of the Lord, this holy God? To whom will the ark go up from here?”

Acts 14:17 Yet he has not left himself without testimony: He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.”

Romans 8:32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all–how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?

2 Thes. 1:11 With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may count you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may fulfill every good purpose of yours and every act prompted by your faith.

To God all things are equally and always present, there is no distinction between past, present and future. God exists endlessly – (endlessly backwards and forwards in what we would call time.) Think of it this way, God’s eternity extends to past infinity and to future infinity. This is why Psalm 90 can say ” from everlasting to everlasting you are God.”

Take note – The above definition is not to suggest that time is unreal to God or that it does not exist. While God sees everything as an eternal now in relation to man and creation He does see a succession of events in time. God created time, but He is not in time.

Wayne Grudem in his Systematic Theology (p. 168) states “God has no beginning, end or succession of moments in His own being, and he sees all time equally and vividly, yet God sees events in time and acts in time.”

The good news from this is we can have confidence because God has never, nor will He ever cease to exist. His sustaining, providential control of all things and events is assured.

Genesis 21:33 Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he called upon the name of the Lord, the Eternal God.

Deut. 32:40 I lift my hand to heaven and declare: As surely as I live forever,

Deut. 33:27 The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms. He will drive out your enemy before you, saying, ‘Destroy him!’

1 Chron. 16:36 Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Then all the people said “Amen” and “Praise the Lord.”

Job 36:26 How great is God–beyond our understanding! The number of his years is past finding out.

Psalm 29:10 The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord is enthroned as King forever.

Psalm 41:13 Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Amen and Amen.

Psalm 45:6 Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.

Psalm 48:14 For this God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end.

Rev. 4:8-9 Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under his wings. Day and night they never stop saying:

“Holy, holy, holy

is the Lord God Almighty,

who was, and is, and is to come.”

9Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever,

This is not just a prayer, it is also a statement to the world about their God. It was a declaration of monotheism.

Our God is one in His essence and He cannot be divided. God’s unity is defined in a way that He is not a composite, nor can He be divided into His parts. Again,God is One God who is indivisible.

God is not divided into parts, yet we see different attributes of God emphasized at different times.

Exodus 15:11 “Who among the gods is like you, O Lord? Who is like you– majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders?

Deut. 4:35 You were shown these things so that you might know that the Lord is God; besides him there is no other.

Deut. 4:39 Acknowledge and take to heart this day that the Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth below. There is no other.

Deut. 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.

Deut. 32:39 “See now that I myself am He! There is no god besides me. I put to death and I bring to life, I have wounded and I will heal, and no one can deliver out of my hand.

2 Samuel 7:22 “How great you are, O Sovereign Lord! There is no one like you, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears.

1 Kings 8:60 so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the Lord is God and that there is no other.

Psalm 86:10 For you are great and do marvelous deeds; you alone are God.

Isaiah 42:8 “I am the Lord; that is my name! I will not give my glory to another or my praise to idols.

Isaiah 44:6 “This is what the Lord says– Israel’s King and Redeemer, the Lord Almighty: I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God.

Isaiah 45:5 I am the Lord, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God. I will strengthen you, though you have not acknowledged me,

Joel 2:27 Then you will know that I am in Israel, that I am the Lord your God, and that there is no other; never again will my people be shamed.

Zech. 14:9 The Lord will be king over the whole earth. On that day there will be one Lord, and his name the only name.

John 5:44 How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God?

John 17:3 Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.

1 Cor. 8:4-6 So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that an idol is nothing at all in the world and that there is no God but one. 5For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”), 6yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.

Galatians 3:20 A mediator, however, does not represent just one party; but God is one.

Ephes. 4:5-6 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

1 Tim. 1:17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

1 Tim. 2:5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,

1 Tim. 6:15 which God will bring about in his own time–God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords,

James 2:19 You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that–and shudder.

Are you a non Christian? Are you an honest skeptic? Do you say “I don’t believe in God because we can’t know Him.” ? Follow along as we look into the things that we do know about God.

Why are we given God’s attributes? Why does Scripture speak of these different attributes? Think how big God is. We are unable to grasp all of God’s character at once. We then learn about God by looking ay Him from different perspectives over a period of time.

Let me caution the reader – never set these varying perspectives in opposition to ne another. They are to be used to look at the totality of God’s character.

We will look at all the Bible passages that describe God in 21 categories.

2 Cor. 3:17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

2 Cor. 7:10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.

Col. 3:11 Here (in Christ) there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.

2 Tim. 2:13 … he (Jesus) will remain faithful,

2 Tim. 2:19 … “The Lord knows those who are his,”

Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

James 1:3 because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.

James 1:17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

1 Peter 3:22 (Jesus) who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand–with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.

2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

Rev. 1:7 … he (Jesus) is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him,

Rev. 17:14 … he (Jesus) is Lord of lords and King of kings

Rev. 20:7-10 … the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

Rev. 21:27 Nothing impure will ever enter it (The New Jerusalem), nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

Rev. 22:3 No longer will there be any curse (in The New Jerusalem).

Rev. 22:5 There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.

Hebrews 12:11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

James 4:12 There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you–who are you to judge your neighbor?

James 4:14-15 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.”

1 John 2:9 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness.

1 John 2:10 Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble.

1 John 2:20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.

1 John 5:17 All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death.

2 John 1:9 Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.

Galatians 3:24-26 So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith. 25Now that faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision of the law. 26You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus,

1 Tim. 1:8 We know that the law is good if one uses it properly.

1 Tim. 3:1 Here is a trustworthy saying: If anyone sets his heart on being an overseer, he desires a noble task.

1 Tim. 4:4-5 For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.

2 Tim. 2:5 Similarly, if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not receive the victor’s crown unless he competes according to the rules.

2 Tim. 2:25-26 Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, 26and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.

2 Tim. 3:1 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days.

2 Tim. 3:13 while evil men and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.

2 Tim. 4:3-4 For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.

Titus 1:15 To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted.

Hebrews 5:13-14 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.

Hebrews 6:4-6 It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age, 6if they fall away, to be brought back to repentance, because to their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace.

Hebrews 10:1 The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming–not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship.

Hebrews 10:31 It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.
